[Coming Soon] Sea Meteor F Mk 3: Leap from the Deck

The Big and Medium Trophies contain a pioneering British jet, fast to accelerate but dangerous in a turn.

Historical Note

In 1948, two Gloster Meteor F Mk 3 fighters were modified for deck-landing trials. The aircraft were equipped with arresting hooks, reinforced lower fuselages and landing gear, and more powerful Derwent 5 turbojet engines. The modified Meteors then conducted a series of takeoff and landing tests aboard the British aircraft carriers Illustrious and Implacable.

Although the Royal Navy was impressed by the fighter’s performance and test results, the Meteor was not adopted for carrier operations. Instead, preference was given to the Supermarine Attacker, which became the first fully operational jet aircraft in British naval aviation.

Brief Analysis

Strengths: Powerful low-altitude engines, strong acceleration, four 20 mm cannons, and two 1,000 lb bombs.
Weaknesses: Mediocre horizontal maneuverability.

Great Britain storms into War Thunder Mobile's jet era! Meet the Sea Meteor F Mk 3 – an experimental carrier-based variant of Britain's first production jet fighter. Twin powerful engines, rock-solid fixed armament, and capable suspended ordnance make this modified Meteor one formidable debut.

Early versions of the “Meteor,” powered by Derwent I engines, lacked the thrust-to-weight ratio required for effective carrier takeoff. The later Derwent V variant was nearly twice as powerful, resolving this limitation. In combat, the aircraft accelerates rapidly and reaches top speed at medium altitudes, giving it a clear advantage over most early jet fighters. While opponents are still climbing and building speed, the Sea Meteor is already at full velocity, actively engaging targets.

Four 20 mm Hispano autocannons are mounted in the forward fuselage, delivering enough firepower to destroy most enemies with a few short bursts. In addition to its fixed armament, the aircraft can carry suspended ordnance, including two 1,000 lb bombs for engaging small ground targets.

The long wings and heavy engines limit roll rate, and the naval “Meteor” has poor turning performance. It excels in vertical maneuvers and high-speed passes with sharp breakaways from pursuers. Try this demanding British aircraft and explore its full capabilities in combat.
