Historical Note

The Kortenaer-class frigates were designed in the 1970s for the Royal Netherlands Navy as multi-purpose warships intended to counter surface, underwater, and aerial threats. Twelve ships of the class were built between 1978 and 1982 at the KM De Schelde and Wilton-Fijenoord shipyards. Two were sold to Greece while still under construction and were replaced in the Dutch fleet by specialized air-defense frigates.

By 2003, all of these ships had left service with the Dutch fleet and were sold to Greece and the United Arab Emirates. The decision to sell relatively new and combat-capable frigates resulted from several factors, the primary one being the sharp reduction in the Netherlands’ military budget following the end of the Cold War.

Brief Overview

Strengths: Powerful and versatile armament, including Harpoon and Sea Sparrow guided missiles, two automatic 76 mm cannons, and torpedoes. Decent maneuverability.
Weaknesses: Minimal armor and low survivability.
Role in battle: An effective missile ship with strong capabilities in both long-range engagements and close-quarters combat.

In battle

Following HNLMS Tromp, another Dutch “missile boat” arrives in War Thunder Mobile. This multi-purpose ship of the Royal Netherlands Navy delivers dense salvos of guided missiles for long-range targets, two 76-mm autocannons, and torpedoes for close-range encounters!

HNLMS Kortenaer was designed as a universal, or “standard,” warship capable of engaging threats underwater, on the surface, and in the air. In the game, the frigate features a strong armament centered on guided missiles: anti-ship Harpoons mounted in two twin-tube launchers, and anti-air Sea Sparrows launched from a rotating deck-mounted system.

The two 76-mm OTO Melara automatic cannons allow you to confidently engage targets in close combat while also effectively striking aircraft. For point-blank engagements, HNLMS Kortenaer is equipped with torpedoes. Two twin-tube 324-mm torpedo launchers allow the ship to send enemy vessels to the bottom by bypassing their protection. As a result, the frigate is dangerous at any distance, from the horizon to narrow straits.

HNLMS Kortenaer is a large ship but remains relatively agile. Two gas turbine installations provide a typical top speed for vessels of its class. Maneuverability is generally good, allowing the ship to engage effectively from behind cover such as rocks, islands, or icebergs. The main drawback of HNLMS Kortenaer, shared with other ships of this class, is the near absence of meaningful armor and its resulting vulnerability. To compensate, rely on smoke screens and electronic countermeasures, and avoid exposing the ship to concentrated enemy fire.

Premium version of the HNLMS Kortenaer (Rank VI)

In the Ship Campaign, only one ship can be taken into battle. Because of this, the Premium version of any ship is not a separate unit, but it completely replaces the standard “gray” version. After obtaining the premium version, the blueprints for the standard version of the ship will disappear from the store and trophies, and the ship itself will become unavailable in trophies and jackpots.

Differences between the Premium and Standard versions:

the ability to get gold after a battle, according to the daily limit;
unique premium camouflage;
fully unlocked upgrades in the Arsenal;
the ship gets the maximum crew level immediately.

Premium version of the vehicle:

As a jackpot or as a random reward when attempting to open the Big Trophy.
By reaching the top-10 in the relevant Leaderboard.
From the Collector's Trophy after adding the vehicle to this trophy type;

Standard version of the vehicle:

As a jackpot or as a random reward when attempting to open the Medium Trophy.
Order vehicles for Silver Lions after collecting 1,000 blueprints.

Ways to get blueprints:

From the Medium Trophy: 700 pcs in the guaranteed reward, or 10 to 100 pcs per attempt.
From the Big Trophy: 700 pcs in the guaranteed reward, or 80 to 200 pcs per attempt.
In the in-game store: purchase for Silver Lions a Folder with a number of blueprints (even after the season ends).
