[Coming Soon] F3D-1 Skyknight: The Carrier-Based Knight

The Big and Medium Trophies contain an American carrier-based fighter with a powerful radar and nose-mounted cannons.

Historical note

The F3D Skyknight was a carrier-based night fighter developed shortly after World War II. It became the first production aircraft of its type specifically designed for all-weather, nighttime operations. The aircraft earned its greatest recognition during the Korean War, where it served as a night escort fighter for B-29 bombers.

Although only 265 units were built, F3D crews achieved impressive results against Soviet MiG-15s, largely due to the aircraft’s effective radar. Its service did not end with the Korean War. During the Vietnam War, the aging F3D was repurposed as an electronic warfare platform, as its spacious fuselage could accommodate jamming equipment. The final aircraft were retired in 1970, bringing more than two decades of service to a close.

Brief Analysis

  • Strengths: Excellent nose-mounted armament, heavy payload capacity (including an option with two 2,000 lb bombs), decent overall flight performance, and onboard radar.
  • Weaknesses: Poor acceleration and climb rate, particularly when equipped with a ground-attack loadout.
  • Role in battle: A capable fighter thanks to its well-placed nose armament and radar, while also serving as an effective attacker due to its substantial payload capacity.

In battle

In the upcoming seasonal update for War Thunder Mobile, a true carrier-based knight of the skies arrives: the “Skyknight,” equipped with onboard radar and powerful underwing ordnance.

The aircraft’s exceptional situational awareness, remarkable for its era, comes from its search and tracking radar, which can detect and track aerial targets long before visual contact is possible. The “Skyknight” is well equipped for engagements with detected enemies, featuring a battery of four 20 mm cannons mounted in the lower nose section. This placement provides stable, comfortable aiming even at considerable distances. Its underwing ordnance is equally impressive. Pilots can carry two massive Tiny Tim rockets, along with a pair of 500, 1,000, or even 2,000 lb bombs.

The F3D-1’s flight performance is comparable to other early jet aircraft, but only in its fighter configuration. When equipped with heavy bombs, climbing becomes difficult and its top speed drops to that of late-generation piston-engine fighters. Even in its heaviest ground-attack configuration with two 2,000-pound bombs, the Skyknight can still outperform many bombers in the game and operate effectively at low altitude.

The F3D-1 Skyknight will surprise its pilots with its versatility in combat, whether engaging enemy fighters or taking on the role of a top attacker that rivals many bombers in effectiveness.
