[Event] Battle of Leyte

Commanders! We invite you to take part in a special event dedicated to the largest naval battle in world history – the Battle of Leyte Gulf!

Event dates: 🚩 October 17th – October 23rd (ends at 10:00 GMT).

Tasks

The event will last for 6 days. 12 tasks will be available from the start of the event.

Please note that after the end of the event, it will not be possible to obtain themed decorative rewards.

Historical Note

By the autumn of 1944, Japan was losing the initiative in the war in the Pacific. In a desperate attempt to turn the tide, the Japanese command devised a complex and daring plan, "Sho-1" (Victory). Its objective was to destroy the American forces that had landed on the island of Leyte in the Philippines. The capture of the Philippines by the Americans would have severed Japan from vital resources in Southeast Asia.

A large-scale battle unfolded from October 23 to 25, 1944, and was marked by the first mass use of kamikaze tactics. The Japanese fleet, divided into three groups, attempted to pincer the Americans:

• The Northern Group, with decoy aircraft carriers that had almost no planes, was tasked with luring away the main US forces.
• The Center Group – the most powerful, featuring the battleships Yamato and Musashi – was aimed at breaking through the San Bernardino Strait to reach the invasion transports.
• The Southern Group was to strike through the Surigao Strait.

The outcome of the battle was a crushing defeat for the Japanese fleet, which lost 4 aircraft carriers, 3 battleships, 10 cruisers, and 11 destroyers, ceasing to exist as a serious offensive force. The Americans secured their beachhead, solidifying their control over the Philippines.

The Battle of Leyte is rightly considered the largest naval battle in history by the area covered, the tonnage of ships sunk, and the number of forces involved.
